Burst Pipe or Backup in New Smyrna Beach? Reach an Emergency Plumber in Neighboring Edgewater

Water on the floor, a drain that has quit or a water heater that has gone cold does not wait for a convenient hour. New Smyrna Beach sits about three miles from Edgewater, and this page explains what to do first and what to ask us when you call.

Read the water bill before you call anyone

New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater are two separate cities in Volusia County, and each runs its own utility. New Smyrna Beach Utilities, listed at 200 Canal Street, handles water, sewer and waste services for the city's customers. The City of Edgewater utility bills water, sewer, stormwater and garbage on one bill, and its customer line is 386-424-2400, extension 4000.

Which of the two serves your address depends on the address, so the bill itself is the quickest answer. The name at the top tells you whom to phone when the problem sits on the street side of the meter, such as low pressure for the whole block, a leak in the road or a sewer main that has backed up into several houses. We did not find a published rule that says where each utility's service ends, so we do not guess.

  1. Find the bill or the online account. The utility name and the account number are on the first page.
  2. Look at the meter. If it spins with every tap closed, water is escaping somewhere between the meter and the fixtures.
  3. Note what the neighbors see. If the whole street has low pressure, the cause is probably outside your property and the utility is the right call.

When the cause is on your side, a tracing a hidden leak visit finds it before anything is opened up.

Calling from New Smyrna Beach? Here is what to expect

We want to be direct about this. Our confirmed service ZIP codes are 32132 and 32141, both in Edgewater. New Smyrna Beach does not appear on our current list of confirmed ZIP codes, and we do not want a page to promise something a phone call has to take back.

That does not mean the answer is no. New Smyrna Beach is about three miles from Edgewater, and many requests from that side of the line are worth a conversation. It does mean the honest first step is a short call. Give us the street address, tell us what is happening, and we will say whether we can reach you and what we would check first. If we cannot reach the address, we will say so and not leave you waiting.

When it cannot wait: what to do in the first ten minutes

Most plumbing emergencies are worse because of what happens in the first few minutes, not because of the pipe itself. Match your situation to the move below.

What you seeDo this firstThen
Water spraying or pooling from a pipeClose the main shutoff at the houseOpen a low faucet to drain the lines, then call
Sewage backing up in a tub or floor drainStop running water and flushingKeep people and pets out, then call
A tank leaking at the baseShut the cold supply to the heater and cut its power or gasCall before the floor soaks through
Smell of gasLeave the buildingCall 911 or the gas provider from outside

The main shutoff is often on the front wall of the house, in a garage or near the meter. Find it now, before you need it, and check that the valve actually turns. A stuck valve is a common surprise during a burst. If a supply line has already let go, stopping a burst line explains the repair that follows.

Water that has already reached walls and floors is a separate job. Drying after water loss is a separate service with its own phone number, shown on that page.

A heater that quit and a permit that may apply

If the heater is the problem, there are two questions. Is it worth saving, and who needs to know about the work? The first depends on the tank's age, where it leaks and whether the leak is at a fitting or in the tank body. A fitting can often be repaired. A tank that is wet at the base usually cannot.

The second question is about permits. The City of Edgewater's fee schedule lists a water heater change out permit, and we could not confirm that the schedule is current, since the copy we found dates to 2019. We have not verified what New Smyrna Beach requires. Phone the building department of the city your address is in and ask, and ask your plumber who pulls the permit. See swapping a tank heater for the questions a quote should answer, or repairing a heater first if the tank is young.

Checking a plumber before the work starts

Florida requires plumbing work to be done by a contractor holding a state license and permitted where the local building department asks for it. The Department of Business and Professional Regulation lets you check a license at myfloridalicense.com or by phone at 850-487-1395. A contractor who advertises must include a license number. Do this check for any plumber, including us, before agreeing to anything.

  • Ask for the scope in writing. What is being repaired or replaced, and what is not.
  • Ask for the cause. A plumber should be able to show you where the water was coming from, with a photo or a reading.
  • Ask about the permit. Who pulls it and what the inspection involves.
  • Ask what happens if more is found. Hidden damage is common, and you should hear how it will be handled before the wall is opened.

Drains and sewer lines on a coastal lot

A slow drain that clears for a day and returns is the usual story. When the clog sits in a kitchen or bath line, clearing a slow drain is the normal first step. If several fixtures back up together, the stoppage is probably in the main line, and a camera run shows what the cable cannot. Damaged sewer pipe repair covers what a camera finding means and how repairs are scoped.

Before any digging, Sunshine 811 is the service to contact so buried utilities are marked. Sunshine 811 asks for at least two full business days' notice, excluding weekends and holidays.

Salt air is the other coastal factor. FEMA's Coastal Building Materials fact sheet says metal corrosion is most pronounced within about 3,000 feet of the ocean. If your home is that close, ask the plumber to look at exposed metal outdoors, such as hose bibs, shutoffs and supply lines, for rust and flaking, and to say what they would replace first.

What to have ready when you call

A short, accurate description gets you a better answer. Have these on hand.

  1. The street address, including the city on your utility bill.
  2. What you can see, where the water is and whether it is clear or dirty.
  3. What you have already shut off, and whether the valve closed fully.
  4. The age of the house or the heater, if you know it.

For general price ranges before you call, our page on what plumbing typically costs explains what moves a quote. The towns we cover shows where we work today.
